Uzume
A delicate fusion of folded canvases, mirrors, and collage, this artwork takes on a life of its own as it hangs before us. An evocation of the goddess of dawn and revelry in the Shinto pantheon, Uzume bears witness to a deeply personal narrative that unfurls amidst layers of symbolism.
The mirror eyes seem to beckon, inviting us to delve into their depths. Strings dangle, like lashes, tears, or perhaps hair, a metaphorical connection between the eye and the soul's emotional tapestry. Behind this, a bright red collage emerges and a stylized flower peeks from the folds.
Unveiled for a New York exhibition in 2023, the piece invites us to a space where identity, culture, and the subtle mirror of society intermingle. Through the lens of an Asian American woman's experience, "Uzume" invites us to meditate upon the intersections of past and present, myth and reality.
