Painted canvas folded into sculpture

Susan Maddux is a Los Angeles-based painter known for transforming pigment-stained canvas into draped, totemic sculptures through folding. Born in Honolulu and raised between Hawaii and Northern Idaho, she is a fourth-generation Japanese American of mixed heritage. She earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and spent two decades in New York working in textile and surface-pattern design, an experience that continues to inform her use of color, material, and repetition. Her folded paintings move between painting, textile, and sculpture, guided by touch, curiosity, and the belief that working with the hands is a way of thinking.
