For an L.A. artist, a new approach to paint and canvas yields 3D Results

The unadorned materials serve as perfect offsets to the most unique feature of the hotel: the custom-made artworks that adorn each one of its 287 rooms. What makes it especially interesting is that every single piece is a work of handmade fibre art.

Inside the 287 guest rooms – inspired by the raw artist studio spaces of the European modernists – hangs the work of two dozen contemporary textile artists with deep ties to the district’s rich tapestry.

“A Kind of Homecoming" is the theme for a collection by Susan Maddux on view now in Chinatown. Maddux applies acrylic paint and dyes in color washes on canvas, then folds the material to create different forms.

After seeing these photos from the LA Design Festival, I’m reminded of how much I need to get out of the house to be inspired by project like this in person. When I first saw these pop up on Instagram, I was gobsmacked.
